UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) CEO Dr. Ajay Bhushan Pandey, in a recent interview, said that the Non-resident Indians and individuals of Indian origin (NRIs) holding Aadhaar cards, may face legal action.
The Indian Government is making huge efforts, in linking Aadhar with all the Government schemes.
The NRIs requires Aadhar to send money to their family members, back in India and for other needs.
Few of the NRIs, may have already acquired the Government issued cards.
But, the question arises, “Do the NRIs really need Aadhaar? Are they eligible to acquire Aadhaar?”
Pandey, replying to the questions, said, the clause in the Aadhar application itself implies that, the Aadhaar is “for Indians only”, and NRIs are ineligible for it.
Those NRI individuals, who are having Aadhar cards, must have got the cards through illegal means, as the regulations with hold authorities from issuing Aadhar to them legally, said Pandey.
Pandey however said that, it is the choice of Indian Government, whether or not to take legal action against those NRIs.
“Whatever I have said is according to the regulations prescribed in Aadhaar Act,” he said.
The Government must either exempt the NRIs or make alternative provisions for them to avail Bank, Railway and other services.
There is no regulation in the Act, like Aadhaar is compulsory for NRIs.
Recently, the Indian Government, has instructed that every individual, must link his Aadhaar with PAN Card by June 30.
The Government has also made Aadhaar mandatory to book train tickets, but did not mention whether the same rules apply to NRIs or not.
