Aadhar is not mandatory- SC

“To benefit from government services, possessing Aadhar card is not mandatory”, Supreme Court declares.

A many petitions were filed in the court by the government saying that, Aadhar should be made a mandatory. Considering all those, Supreme Court felt that, there is no such need to maintain Aadhar in all occassions.

The government argued that, Aadhar card ensures the transparency in their services and believed that it is an essential tool. But the court rejected the plea, saying that, it will now have to publicise widely that the Aadhaar card was not mandatory.

Aadhar applicable to government subsidies

The court further said, “no authority shall seek Aadhaar cards from citizens to accord any type of government services. However the Aadhar card can be used to avail the subsidies in the public distribution system, gas cylinders and purchasing kerosene on the discretion of the card holder.”

It is known that, Unique Identification Authority of India collected the bio metric data. “That data should not be used for any other purpose, other than in criminal investigations and that too with the court’s permission and the responsibility of preserving the data should solely be taken by the government,” SC judges said.

This is in fact a good news to the Indian citizens as, the governemnt services which are already said to be slow, would more be delayed, if the Aadhar is linked with it. Moreover, the process of it might not be understood by a lay man. Keeping all these points in mind, except for the basic subsidies, for rest other services, Supreme Court declared that Aadhar is not mandatory.
