Hyderabad Mayor Bonthu Rammohan on Sunday announced that the GHMC would plant as many as 10 crore saplings in coming three years under the Haritha Haram programme.
Speaking at a press conference, the mayor said that “Monday’s target would be exceeded by 10 lakh more saplings against actual goal of 25 lakh. We are not only organising mega events on Haritha Haram for massive plantation drive but also taking responsibility for the protection of planted saplings.”
GHMC chief B. Janardhan Reddy said that “28.5 lakh pits were dug for the massive plantation programme. GHMC itself will plant about 7.5 lakh saplings at an estimated cost of Rs 21 crore.”
Haritha Haram is the government’s flagship programme to increase forest cover.
The mayor participated in Haritha Haram held along with cine actors Rakul Preet Singh, Rasi Khanna, Deputy Mayor Mr. Baba Fasiuddin and others at KBR Park.
Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao would also be participating in the green drive today. He is likely to take part in Telanganaku Haritha Haram programme at Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) at about 11.30 am.
According to the sources, even Governor ESL Narasimhan will also attend the green drive that began on a mission mode at BHEL area and plant a sapling around 11 am.
On the same day, Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao will be attending the green drive at Bio Diversity Park and plant a sapling. The plantation drive is going on across the State with an aim to plant 46 crore saplings.
