Yesterday, Andhra Pradesh government announced the inclusion of Kapu community under BC category.

During the elections, the TDP announced that it would include Kapu community in BC category. But there are several criticisms raised by the other communities, who are unwilling to share the benefits with the Kapu community.

But assuring that, none would be neglected, the government finally announced the inclusion of the Kapu community in BC category.

Speaking about the issue, Finance Minister Yanamala Rama Krishunudu said, “Fulfilling the TDP's electoral promise, the government has decided to bring Kapu community under BC category. The government has also decided to constitute a commission to study the issue of reservations to be provided for the community.”

“Regarding the proposal, the panel will submit its report within 9 months, based on whose recommendations the government will decide the proportion of reservation for the community,” Yanamala said.

The minister stressed that, Kapus will not get reservation from the quota being provided to BCS (a sub-group under BC category), thus assuring the safety to the present communities.

With Rs. 100 crores budget, Kapu Financial Corporation will be set up to provide financial assistance to community members for their self employment.

Currently, the Kapus are majorly concentrated in the coastal districts, North Telangana and Rayalaseema regions and falls under Other Caste (OC) category.

Not only Kapus, even decision on Andhra Pradesh Maritime Board

Along with the Kapu community issue, in the same meeting, the government has even decided to constitute Andhra Pradesh Maritime Board, for promoting and regulating minor ports in the state.

Speaking about this, Yanamala said, “With the vast coastal line in AP, it has an opportunity to develop new ports and port-related activity.”

Also, keeping in mind the drought conditions in the state, the government even announced to construct 6 lakh farm ponds at an estimated cost of Rs 2,000 crore. Each pond requires 10 acres.

The funds from departments of agriculture, irrigation and under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment would be pooled in to take up the construction work.
