Tension grips OU campus

Tension gripped the OU campus and its surrounding areas today after the police had stopped the students’ rally from the Arts College in the university to the Gunpark at Abids in Hyderabad opposing the AP Formation Day celebrations.

In response to the call given by the Telangana political JAC to observe the day as the day of betrayal, hundreds of students began their rally to the Gunpark memorial wearing black badges and raising slogans of Telangana but they were stopped by the police at the NCC gate.

Steel-helmeted police told the students section 144 was in force in the city and asked them to go back to their campus resulting in heated arguments between the students and police. As angered students hurled stones on the police, the latter responded with cane charging and lobbing tear gas shells.

Following the scuffle, tension continued in and around the OU Campus for some hours. Police were deployed in large numbers as a precautionary measure.
