Ground water in majority areas of the Hyderabad city has become unfit for consumption and needs treatment for both biological and chemical contamination before it is used for drinking purposes.
A study by the Central Ground Water Board revealed that the ground water contained high fluoride levels and failed in tests of total hardness, calcium, magnesium, chloride, sulphate and nitrate contents.
The chemical contamination in most of the areas is found to be above the desirable and permissible levels. The disposal of effluents in LB Nagar, organic pollution in areas adjoining the Musi River, and industrial pollution in the industrial areas are the prime reasons for the disturbing news, said the report.
The Central Ground Water Board carried out the study in Uppal, Golconda, Yusufguda, Sanathnagar, Jeedimetla, Bolaram Industrial Area, Attapur, Hyderguda, Sanjeevayya Park, Kattedan, Bhulaxminagar, Niralanagar, Doctors’ Colony, Sirinagar and LB Nagar.
Based on the study, the HMDA has declared that ground water in Hyderabad is not fit for drinking purposes unless it is treated for both biological and chemical contamination.
The use of ground water without being treated will result in health risks like scaling of skin, hair loss, learning impairment and neurological disorders, cancers, blue baby disease and dental and skeletal fluorosis.
