A Durango based company has requested the Colorado Water Conservation Board to renew the cloud seeding permit it had been granted earlier. The CWCB however is yet to make a decision on the same. The board would hold a public hearing on the same to grant permissions for cloud-seeding for the next five winters.
Western Weather Consultants have asked for the permissions with a view to perform cloud seeding for Denver Water, Colorado Springs Utilities and others. This would increase the amount of precipitation the regions receive increasing the number of benefits for water users, farmers and Ski resorts.
Cloud seeding involves utilization of generators in the ground to develop crystals of Silver Iodide which are generally present in the center of the clouds. Such a move would make the installations the center of the clouds and hence more precipitation.
The Colorado Water Conservation Board plans a public hearing Monday evening in Silverthorne on the request to renew the permit.
