Highly renowned lyricist and poet from our country Gulzar is celebrating his 76th birthday today. He has also been a great director too.
Originally named Sampooran Singh Kalra, he became well known to the public by his pen name Gulzar.
Radio Mantra has honored his birthday by organizing a special program under the name Gulzaarish, which would feature over 77 songs which were authored by Gulzar apart from trivia related to the star.

He was born into a Kalra Arora Singh family and had initially been a car mechanic in a garage before he turned a writer.
He is the recipient of Padma Bhushan in 2004 and also the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2002. He has won countless other awards including the National Film Awards and Filmfare awards. He had also laid his hands on the prestigious Academy Award for his work "Jai Ho" for the Hollywood flick Slumdog Millionaire in 2010. For the same song he had also received a Grammy Award for the best soundtrack for a feature film.

Besides being an unparalleled lyricist he had also penned the scripts, story and dialogues for several movies.
He married Rakhee, an actress and has a daughter Meghna Gulzar. The parents had not been together since an year of Meghna's birth but they have not divorced.
Meghna, an avid director, had also penned the biography of her father "Because He Is".
