Ajit Upase and her wife Priyadarshini Upase were arrested on Wednesday by Solapur police. The duo who were on the run since June 21 for cases of illegal abortions were remanded to police custody till the 7th of July.

The doctors were under suspicion since June 21 when a midwide was spotted burying a female fetus in the crematorium. Sangita Gaurav who worked at the Upase Hospital was arrested for an illegal abortion on June 22.

Midwife Lalitha Kamble reported to the police that Kalpana Konda, mother of three girls, has aborted her pregnancy at the hospital. Kalpana and Kashinath, her husband, were arrested on the following day, June 23.

Kalpana, Kashinath, Gaurav and Kamble were all produced in a First class Judicial Magistrate on June 23rd and were remanded to police custody for 2 days till June 25th. Later the district court ordered that they be remanded to judicial custody for 2 weeks.

Kamble was spotted by BJP coroporator Suvarna Hiremath and her husband who grew suspicious when she was carrying a bag. They followed her to the burial ground after which they had informed the police.
