On January 4 in Pune an 81-year-old Mohiniraj Kulkarni was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl.He was also a fine Rs.12,000.  Another three years was awarded for sabotage of evidence.The victim's mother, Rekha, who was employed to take care of Kulkarni's sickly wife Mrunalini.

In this case the victims mother Rekha who turned as approver.Additional Public Prosecutor Vikas Shah who argued for the death sentence to 81 year-old man Mohiniraj Kulkarni,But the defence lawyer Viraj Kakde appealed the court for considering Kulkarni's age in gving the minimum sentence.

While announcing the sentence, Judge Darane said it was the rarest of the rare case but life imprisonment was awarded considering Kulkarni's age. Kulkarni raped and murdered the 10-year-old victim on October 14, 2009. The incident took place in the afternoon when Rekha had stepped out to get tiffin for the Kulkarni couple. When she returned, she was unable to find her daughter. When she climbed up to the terrace, she found her daughter lying unconscious. Rekha took her daughter to Poona Hospital, where she was declared dead upon arrival.

Investigations revealed that Kulkarni had offered Rekha Rs 50,000 and had also threatened her. Kulkarni had also asked Rekha to make the incident look like her daughter had tried to strangulate herself. Considering Kulkarni's age, it took 10 days for the Vishrambaug police to arrest him. He and Rekha had an illicit relationship. Investigations revealed that Kulkarni, who was habitual to specific drugs to boost his sexual power, used to pedal daily till the Pune railway station area to buy Viagra at a cheap rate.

So during a search at Kulkarni's house the police found empty tablet pouches.According to the chargesheet filed before to this incident Mohiniraj Kulkarni had raped the girl which was disagreed by Rekha,But to suppress her opposition, he had increased Rekha's salary.
