Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard will be the highest paid politician in the world with her salary set to rise to a whopping $476,000 (481,000 Australian dollars) more than what the US President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron earn.
The Australian pay tribunal has hiked the salary of its PM exorbitantly and the country’s parliament has to approve the proposal now. The PM’s present salary is 367,000 Australian dollars.
In comparison, Obama salary is 400,000 Australian dollars, and that of British Prime Minister Mr. Cameron is only 221,000 Australian dollars.
The Pay Tribunal president John Conde said that Ms. Gillard’s new salary is very reasonable and observed good salary is to be paid to the politicians to attract people into Parliament from all walks of life.
Once the changes come into effect, a newly elected Parliament member
will get anything between 185,000 and 250,000 Australian dollars as salary, according to media reports. Opposition leaders’ pay also will have a substantial rise ranging from 20 to 27.5 per cent. (JUBS)
