The stories of the poor, the homeless and the orphans often touch and stir emotional chords just like the unfortunate story of a 30-year-old who lost her real parents when born and adopted ones at the age of eight. Homeless and helpless, Kairi Abha Shepherd will now have to live in India, a country, which is completely strange to her.
Even though a noble woman adopted an orphan decades ago, the fate of little Kairi didn’t show mercy on her. Erlene, who adopted Kairi, from Kolkata along with other 10 children across the globe, brought her to US. But, before she completed the paper work that would make Kairi an India born US citizen, Erlene died of Cancer.
Having no guardian to look after, Kairi somehow grew up. However, she reportedly became addicted to drugs, which in turn made her forge a cheque to make her ends meet. She was convicted of felonious crime for forging the cheque and this was the time that the authorities came to know she was an illegal immigrant.
A group of lawyers who have voluntarily come forward to support Kairi are planning to make an appeal before the Supreme Court within 45 days as US immigration officials will soon begin deportation proceedings. The worst part of Kairi is that she’s suffering from multiple sclerosis.
We need to keep our fingers crossed and wait as to what would happen with Kairi. Hope Lord will shower his blessings on this global orphan! (Phani)
