Government to monitor Facebook, Twitter

With a view to curb communal flare-up, Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said that his ministry was planning to monitor social media like Facebook and Twitter. Shinde was indirectly refering to the use of old "provocative" pictures that had caused the Muzaffarnagar riots.

The home minister while launching a Hindi newspaper in Patna stated that he has seen old provocative photographs that were in circulation via Facebook and result in communal riots. The function was also attended by Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar and Lalu Prasad Yadav, the RJD president.

Shinde said that some provocative material on the Northeast was recently circulated, but strict action was carried out in the case. The home minister added that in view of social media's negative impact on society, the government is thinking of puting checks on them.
