Smartphones to be your own health monitors

Mobiles phones have swept out all the excess baggage in our daily lives. The watch, calculator, radio and what not everything is out and only the mobile is in. With the arrival of its upgraded sibling, smart phones, computers are being less used on the move. For emails or chatting the smart ones come handy. Going on the trends as per a research conducted by University of Sydney, the tiny device is to don the avatar of your own health monitor.

Researchers claim that instead of an electrode on the chest, a small sensor on the finger tip would monitor the heart beat and understand the behaviour of the person. This would be the most inexpensive way, once the project turns conventional.

Medical experts claim that every single fluctuation in the heart beat has a direct impact on the behavioural patterns on each individual. Hence monitoring would be much useful and could delay the onset of heart diseases and in some cases might aswell avoid the dreaded ailment.

James Heathers, the doctoral student from University's School of Psychology is heading the project and is supported by Simon Wegerif, a biomedical engineer working for HRV Fit Ltd. Infact HRV already has a mobile app, iThelete used by many acclaimed sports personality. It is used to judge the heart rate variability which has a direct impact on the performance of the person.

The researchers presented their developments alongwith a detailed report at Australasian Society for Psychophysiology conference 2012. (Wishesh AarKay)
