Pluto's moon count increased

After its exclusion from the solar family, Pluto is not alone. Another moon that has been orbiting the  planet has been discovered which increases the number of known moons of the icy sphere to five. Scientists formally confirmed the orbiting rock to be a moon on Wednesday.

Playing with the Hubble Telescope, a team of scientists have been observing Pluto and its surroundings to make findings ahead of the NASA's spacecraft which is expected to comeback in 2015. The New Horizons craft was sent to scout the space in 2006 back when it still belonged to the planetary system. International Astronomical Union later demoted the planetary status of the planet to a dwarf planet.

The new moon of Pluto was temporarily named P5 has made cameo appearances by showing itself as a not very obvious fleck in the images from Hubble. The moon is estimated to measure no more than 6-15 kilo miles in diameter, which is smaller than the moon they discovered last year which measured 8-21 miles wide.

Other moons of Pluto include Charon, the largest moon with a 650 mile wide diameter discovered in 1978, followed by Nix and Hydra which were discovered in 2005.

The names of the 2 new moons would not be disclosed until the Hubble data is completely analysed as they expect more moons to be orbiting the planet. He has added that they would name based on Greek Mythology with names that go together, Orpheus and Eurydice for example.

He also said in an email that they would have to look for another story in Grek Mythology if any more moons were discovered.
