Lok Sabha Clears Citizenship Amendment Bill:- After a day-long discussion, the Lok Sabha passed the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2019. The heated debate took place for seven hours. Union Home Minister Amit Shah invoked the partition saying that BJP brought the bill because of Congress who partitioned the country in 1947 on the basis of religion. 311 MPs voted in favor of the bill while 80 MPs voted against it. The CAB provides citizenship for migrants or refugees of six communities: Hindus, Sikhs, Parsis, Jains, Buddhists and Christians.
The government has been criticized for providing citizenship for non-Muslim refugees. The bill will come up for nod in Rajya Sabha today. Amit Shah said that there is no political agenda behind the Citizenship Amendment Bill. He reminded that the bill has been under discussion from the past few years and said that they had to differentiate between the refugees and intruders. Amit Shah also said that Muslims in India are living with respect and they would continue to do so. The students from northeastern states started their agitation by calling for a bandh.
