The Telangana HMDA has decided to make India’s largest tricolour flag from the Dubai-based Channel Group International because the flags always get tear in the stiff breeze. They even tried alternative options like flags made of Pochampally silk but did not work out.
The Dubai based company has promised that the flag would be maintained for six months. Seven flags have been obtained till date from the Mumbai Company that had been making the flags.
Meanwhile, no special activities have been planned for Independence Day at the country’s largest Tricolour other than hoisting a new flag made by the Mumbai firm.
A senior HMDA official said, “The department will be placing an order for one flag in the coming week with the Dubai company. The cost of one flag is Rs 3.2 lakh without transportation charges, while the ones procured from Mumbai cost Rs 1.4 lakh. The firm is giving a guarantee of three months.”
When asked what was special about the new flag, the officer said, “It has a UV coating that prevents the material from fading. It is also made of triple yarn, which prevents damage and the flag can endure high velocity winds.”
Another official added “the city will get another giant flag, with the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology planning to fly a Tricolour measuring 20x30 feet. A 100-feet flag mast has been erected at the IICT campus for the purpose. The flag will be made of synthetic material used for making parachutes.”
He said “the flagpole and flag were sourced from a contractor in Silvassa, Dadra and Nagar Haveli. The 100-feet pole costing around Rs 20 lakh was transported to the city in three parts. The cost will be borne by the IICT, which will maintain the flag with funds sourced from its own resources.”
“The institute had applied for permission for the flag from the Centre in April and was given the go-ahead within two months. This will be the first such flag in all the 37 CSIR institutions in the country. IICT officials expect the flagpole to become a landmark in Hyderabad being the second tallest after the one at Sanjeeviah Park erected by the Telangana government.”
