Earthquake rocks Indonesian island

Northern parts of Indonesia were today rocked by a 5.3 magnitude earthquake but there were no immediate reports of loss of property or life.

The epicenter of the quake was traced around 160 km southeast off Banda Aceh on Indonesia's Sumatra island. The quake struck at a depth of about 1 km, according to the US Geological Survey.

The Aceh province in Indonesia is frequently rocked by earthquakes as the country finds itself on the Pacific Ring of Fire where the earthen plates meet frequently causing high level seismic activity resulting in earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

The Aceh province was devastated in 2004 following a fierce tsunami that rocked the island nation. (JUBS)
