The prospects of the Telangana region attaining separate statehood suffered a severe setback today with the government announcing that any new state could be formed only after unanimity is achieved on a broader political spectrum.
Replying to a question in the Lok Sabha by the Samajwadi Party MP Mr Mohan Singh on the demands for formation of new states and the Government’s response on these demands, Minister of state for Home Mr Jitendra Singh said that the formation of new states would have a negative impact on the federal structure of the nation.
“I assure you that there won’t be any new state in the country without having a broader unanimity among all political parties,” he said.
Mr Jitendra Singh made it clear that all issues and pros and cons would be thoroughly considered before any decision is taken on the formation of new states. (JUBS)
