‘Surya’ editor arrested for cheating Vijaya Bank

Surya-EditorCBI today arrested the editor and owner of the Telugu daily ‘Surya’, Mr Nukarapu Suryaprakasa rao, on the allegation that he had cheated the Vijaya Bank to the tune of Rs 2.64 Cr in 1994.

He was arrested by the CBI when he came to its office today to record his statement in the APIIC-Emaar land scam. He purchased a villa in the Emaar Estates and attended CBI questioning on his buying the villa as per the notices served on him along with others.

The CBI has registered a case against him under sections 120 B and 420 after the officers of the Ananthapuram Vijaya Bank lodged a complaint against him in 1999 for cheating the bank.

When he was produced in the CBI court at Nampally, the court released him as the Supreme Court gave him a deadline of two weeks for surrender in the cheating case. “The court released him as he has still one week at his disposal for surrender as per the orders of the apex court” said the court in its release order.

However, it asked him to attend the court tomorrow at 10.30 am as the court will deliver its order on the punishment to be given to him.

Earlier, soon after his arrest, the lawyers of Suryaprakasa Rao moved high court seeking a stay on the arrest but the high court dismissed his plea saying that it didn’t want to interfere with the work of the CBI.
