Mahindra Subsidiary Acquires BSA Motorcycles at Rs. 28 Crore

A subsidiary of Mahindra & Mahindra Limited, Classic Legends Private Limited, acquired 100% stake in BSA Company Limited at Rs. 28 crore (GBP 3.4 million). The Mahindra has long been contemplating purchase of both the BSA and Norton.

Both of them are British motorcycle brands and Mahindra has been planning to make the best out of the two wheeler market with this acquisition. Classic Legends Private Limited acquired 1.2 lakh shares of the BSA, through which it has secured the license to manufacture, sell, market and distribute its motorcycles all over the world.

As well all know, BSA (Birmingham Small Arms) Company Limited, founded in 1910, has been one of the biggest two-wheeler manufacturers for the past 100 years. However, the company also ran into rough weather, since the 1960s, as they did not introduce any new products. After acquiring the Triumph motorcycles in 1951, the BSA's sales never took off.

Mahindra also exemplifies the rise of Indian corporations into the international arena with its acquisition of most of the major brands throughout the world. Last year, Mahindra acquired European motorcycles manufacturer Peugeot Motorcycles. Other brands as the SsangYong and Pininfarina are controlled by the Mahindra as well.

It is also well known that Mahindra acquired the REVA to enter the electric mobility market and rechristened the brand Mahindra Electric. It has introduced more than a couple of models under the brand.

With the current acquisition, Mahindra & Mahindra is likely to make a mark in the two-wheeler markets of both India, Europe and also the rest of the world.
