As a rule of the thumb, Perfectionist Aamir Khan sticks to his one movie per year regimen and manages to churn out magically brilliant movies which are thoroughly enjoyable by the crowd, barring very few movies. The intellectual Khan not only chooses finest themes for his movies but also delivers the same in the action front.

When a case on investigation forms a hotchpotch with the personal life of the investigator, the tale is undoubtedly taking a turn for the worst. The riveting action that ensues can always make for a great movie. Imagine similar action coupled with a tight story that has little to no loopholes, and you have a movie like Talaash. In short Talash is one movie you dare not miss.

Story

A mysterious accident with no answers whatsoever along with one investigator who is dedicated to solve the case despite the very unfortunate and untimely death of his only tiny-tot twists and turns to form a deliciously convoluted plot. Police officer Surjan Singh Shekhawat aka Suri (Aamir Khan) has his career and personal life too mixed up driving him to the point of insomnia. Searching for answers he finds himself in red-light areas of the city on one hand and extremely uncooperative and often dangerous people on the other.

His assistant, Devrath (Raj Kumar Yadav) helps him with the case as he meets Rosy (Kareena Kapoor) who teases him with hints and speaks in riddles and Temur who is the uncooperative jerk with plans of his own. Roshni, Rani Mukherjee, his wife is bereaved of any hope after the demise of his son and cannot stay on the same terms with Suri. The police also play hard ball trying to goad Suri to drop the case since there are no leads.

Being the dogged officer, Suri, still stays on the case pursuing it wildly, oftentimes blaming himself for the death of his son. He has no idea how his wife suffers from the pain of the death. Shernaz Patel, the neighbor comes to Roshni with a solution for her pain, claiming to help her talk to the spirit of her son. The devastated wife need not logic or reason but only consolation. So she accepts without any hint of doubt.

Is the death of the actor linked to the death of his child? Are the deaths accidental in the first place? Is Temur hindering the progress in the investigation or is he cooperative in his own way? Where is Rosy leading Suri?

The wicked twist of tales that ensues as the story unfolds while stirring up nerve-wracking tension is what forms the rest of the story.

Analysis :

Reema Kagti has managed to put together a splendid script with intricate details and nuances that add to the depth. Story is strong with this one and the execution has been perfect. The heaviness that you feel throughout the movie is the clear signal to tell you that Reema and Zoya Akhtar had done their part brilliantly. Farhan Akhtar has accentuated the quality of the movie with his dialogues. Rosy's character was somewhat exaggerated for how she was portrayed.

The movie doesn't rush and it isn't painfully slow but there are times when you think the movie lacks pace as the camera runs in the dismal, crammed up and crooked streets of Kamatipura. Though there is no melodrama, fortunately, the relationship between Roshni and Suri was well conveyed. Where the movie falls short is the final ending which was not as good as the audience expect, though it is not flawed.

About the director, Reema Kagti knows how to make a good movie for sure. This is the perfect cocktail of emotions for a thriller. The not-very-traditional ending though is something you have to accept. Mohanan deserved applause for his screenplay with such drab locales in the movie, he sure brought out the mystery factor in something so banal. Ram Sampath has driven the audience to a point of excited nervousness with his BGM.

On the soundtracks front, he who made a few quirky numbers with great catchy tunes in Delhi Belly has been put to test once more by Aamir Khan and he has passed, though not with flying colors. Lyrics from Javed Akhtar have been penned with great attention to the moods. Though they may not be chartbusters, a few songs like Laakh duniya kahe', Jee le zaraa' etc definitely would find some space on your iPods for quite some time. More to come after the movie releases on November 30.

Performance :

Aamir Khan, enough said about the action. The Perfectionist has defined the word with his skills. You will see yourself sympathizing with the troubled father who has nowhere else to go. In a de-glam role too, Rani Mukherjee has brought herself enough attention on the screen without a lot of talking, with the tongue and lips but with the eyes and the facial muscles.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui is the hero of the movie with his character as Temur. Raj Kumar Yadav does well as Devrath. Team effort is obvious with other actors matching up to the star actors.

Final Word: This is the movie where your 'Talaash” for for a good suspense thriller should end. The ending as we mentioned is quite unexpected and could be disappointing to some.
