An Indian has once again struck gold at the Asian Championships being held in Amman, Jordan. Rising boxing star Shiva Thapa has won gold for the 56kg category, beating a home favorite Obada Alkabeh.
At 19 years, Shiva is the youngest Indian to have won the top spot at the Asian Championships. The tactically superior match was won in a split decision of 2-1. Shiva played his first Olympic game last year London and has now made history this year as one of only three boxes to have won the elite championships.
Gurbax Singh Sandhu, the national coach, was quoted as saying that though the game a split second decision, Shiva was the better boxer among the two and played with his head.
Until almost an year now, India was suspended internationally because of an unstable administrative set up in the federation. This time, the International Boxing Association's products have won the nation one gold, two silver and a bronze.
