Oz opens: Indo-Russian pair breeze into semis

The Indo- Russian pair of champions surprised the tennis fans at Melbourne when they zip past their American counterparts in the women’s doubles.

In the Australian opens at Melbourne on Tuesday, there was a surprise hauled at the Indian fans. The Indo- Russian duo zoomed past, American pair Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond to claim their berth in the semis by a match winning performance of 6-3, 5-7 and 7-6.  India's Sania Mirza and Russia's Elena Vesnina shall face the Russian combine of Svetlana Kuznetsova and Vera Zvonareva, in women`s doubles semifinal.

The sixth seeded Sania-Vesina fought brilliantly in a meticulous format to defeat the second seeded American pair. The deciding third set lasted 93 minutes, which was more than the duration of the first two sets. Sania and Elena saved eight breakpoints in the third set, apart from converting two and dropping their serve twice in the final set.

In the match tie-break, the two pairs were going neck and neck but Sania and Elena held their nerves and clinched the issue. But today’s match might be mostly in favor of Sania-Vesina, as they are going to face the unseeded Russian pair. But if the latter pulls a fast one, then it might be more interesting to watch.

Sania will also play in the mixed doubles quarterfinal with compatriot Mahesh Bhupathi here Wednesday. They had won the title in 2009.   (With inputs from the Internet-AarKay)
