62-year-old Zimbabwean ex-cricket player, Mr Duncan Fletcher who earlier worked as the coach for England, was today appointed as India’s cricket coach to replace the highly successful Gary Kirsten whose coaching contract was over coinciding with the end of the World Cup.
Fletcher, who has coached England with mixed results from 1999 to 2007, will take over the Indian job for a two-year period.
BCCI has taken the decision to appoint Fletcher as the coach at its working committee meeting in Mumbai today. The Board made the announcement immediately after the meeting ending days of speculation on who will take over the job from Gary Kirsten.
BCCI Secretary N Srinivasan told reporters after the meeting that Eric Simmons, who was the bowling coach during Kirsten’s tenure, will continue in the same position. Fletcher captained Zimbabwe during the 1983 World Cup.
