Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is celebrating his 49th birthday today. Nadella was born on August 19, 1967.
He is the current chief executive officer of Microsoft. He was appointed as CEO on 4 February 2014, succeeding Steve Ballmer. Before becoming CEO, he was Executive Vice President of Microsoft's Cloud and Enterprise group, responsible for building and running the company's Computing Platforms, Developer Tools and Cloud Computing Services.
Nadella was born in Hyderabad. His father, Bukkapuram Nadella Yugandher, was a civil servant of the Indian Administrative Service. Satya Nadella completed his schooling from Hyderabad Public School and went on to study electronics and communication engineering at Manipal University.
He traveled to the U.S. for M.S. degree in computer science at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Later he did MBA from the University of Chicago.
Nadella said “he always wanted to build things. He knew that computer science was what he wanted to pursue, but that passion was at precocious stage while studying at Manipal University. And so it [electrical engineering] was a great way for me to go discover what turned out to become a passion.”
Satya Nadella married his schoolmate Anupama in 1992, the same year he joined Microsoft. He has three children, a son and two daughters who live in Bellevue, Washington.
Like most Indians, Nadella is a big fan of cricket. In fact, he was a part of his school’s cricket team. In an interview he said that “playing cricket taught him about team work and leadership.”
His favorite form of the game is test cricket and he likens it to a Russian novel, because there are so many sub-plots in it. Satya Nadella also enjoys poetry.
To describe his love for Indian and American poetry we’ll quote him when he said, "It's like a code. You are trying to take something that can be described in many, many sentences and pages of prose, but you can convert it into a couple lines of poetry and you still get the essence, so it's that compression."
According to Equilar '200 highest-paid CEO rankings,' Satya Nadella is the highest paid tech CEO in the US. The Microsoft CEO ranks at No. 4 on the overall list with a yearly compensation of $84,308,755. This includes a base salary of $918,917, along with $3,600,000 in cash bonus and $12,729 in perks.
He is also writing a book called Hit Refresh. The book follows three storylines: Nadella's personal journey of transformation, the change that is taking place today inside his storied technology company, and one that is coming in all of our lives as intelligent machines become more ambient and more ubiquitous throughout society. The book will be published by HarperCollins Publishers and come in the year 2017.
