One thing that haunts this billion populace nation is power crisis. As per a politician in south India, due to the frequent power outages, crime rate was surging upwards. Well as this is the Technology section let's not get into much political controversies.
However the new technology called GravityLight devised by a London company seems to have a positive answer to power crisis to some extent and could be path-breaking, if work in this area progresses.
GravityLight is to be the new hope for nearly 1.5 billion who need to live in darkness after sunset. It is powered by gravity in the most innovate format. A sack of sand is gradually pulled by a piece of rope through a dynamo mechanism which powers a LED light. The designers claim that a three-second pull of the sack on the rope will power the LED bulb for nearly 30 minutes. That sounds great!
Technology enthusiasts feel that this could as well be further developed to power a variety of man-handled appliances, if not huge at least like fans, domestic motors, etc. As per the manufacturers the technology costs just $10 at present and while going in bulk it could come down to half or even further down. Martin Riddiford and Jim Reeves are at the moment crowdfunding the idea and plan to supply units to about 1000 villagers as an initial trial.
Finally with the fears surrounded over the 'End Of The World 2012' syndrome globally, this seems to be the hope at the end of the tunnel for those suffering without power. (Wishesh AarKay)
