Is Mahindra becoming the SUV-Maruti in India?

SUV's have always been the hot cakes for the Indian market with the needs of the people tending to have a penchant towards large space and comforts. However, until a few years ago, they consumers had the price barrier that coerced them into settling for a sedan and compromise on the extra benefits of a SUV. Mahindra, tactfully, had based its market on this precise idea and has banked on the SUV segment to gain a boom to their sales.

Initially the Mahindra Xylo, XUV 500 and now the Mahindra Quanto. Mahindra India automakers have redefined luxury making it affordable with their recent line of releases and there are more to come.

The Mahindra Quanto is a cheap entry-level diesel SUV filling the needs of the Indians while not digging your pockets too deep. Aggressively priced at just Rs. 5.82 lakh, this is more than a stiff competition to Renault Duster, the latest in the market which had received a large demand already. Duster is priced a couple of lakhs higher.

Mahindra Quanto would be the latest addition to the stable of  UVs and SUVs from Mahindra which already has Bolero, Xylo, Scorpio and XUV500. The company will soon be adding a premium SUV to this list when it launches the Rexton SUV from the stable of its Korean acquisition Ssangyong, which will compete with segment leader Toyota Fortuner.

But will the sales of Mahindra Quanto affect its own stable? Pawan Goenka, president of Mahindra's automotive division, says no. "All the products have their own unique identity and price points. In fact, we now have a portfolio which is as healthy as Maruti's product-line in hatchbacks. I can safely say that after the entry of Quanto, Mahindra can be called the Maruti of the UV/SUV segment," he said talking to a popular news agency.

Mahindra Quanto would soon be exported to Europe, Africa and Chile, but a new four-cylinder engine would replace the present engine while an all wheel drive is also speculated to make its presence in the vehicle.
