An Indian businessman named Sanjay Kumar has been sentenced two and a half years in jail for faking his death in £1.1m British Pounds life insurance fraud. Going into the details, Sanjay Kumar has both Indian and British citizenship and is the director of nine companies that are into huge losses. To cover the losses of the companies and as creditors are forcing to pay back the money, Sanjay plotted for a sketch.
As part of his plan Sanjay Kumar flew to Delhi in November 2011. He later e-mailed his wife that he was fallen ill and admitted in a hospital. By November 26, Sanjay's wife Anju received an email informing her that Sanjay was died of brain fever and was cremated in Delhi itself.
Later Anju told five insurers that her husband Sanjay had died of brain fever and been cremated in India on 25 November 2011, in an attempt to collect 1.1m pounds in life insurance policies and investments. However, the insurance companies got suspicious and launched an investigation. The city of London Police Insurance Fraud Enforcement Directorate [IFED] discovered that Sanjay is into serious debts and claimed fake death.
Sanjay flew back to London on August 17, 2012 with a different passport and name. The police have arrested Sanjay and his wife Anju on September 11th 2012 as the investigation revealed shocking facts that he had faked his own death.
On 28th April 2014 at Southwark Crown Court, Sanjay pleaded guilty to six counts of fraud by false representation while Anju pleaded guilty to two counts of the same offence. The Court yesterday gave its judgment sentencing Sanjay to two and half years jail and Anju was handed 10-month jail sentence, suspended for two years.
