Today is the day Telangana could come out from the clutches of Hyderabad State rule as it was merged with Indian Union in 1948 following surrender of Nizam's army. Similarly remaining parts of Hyderabad State were merged with Karnataka and Maharashtra on the day where it is celebrated every year officially.
Although it is not an official celebration in the State, it assumed more importance this time because of the separate Telangana Statehood demand from Telangana region, CWC’s decision to bifurcate the State and Samaikyandhra movement.
Political parties of TRS, BJP and CPI paid tributes to the martyrs of the Telangana movement. TDP hoisted National flag at NTR Bhawan observing Telangana Liberation Day. On the occasion TRS and BJP leaders demanded declaration of the day officially by the Government of Andhra Pradesh.
But previously the same demand was turned down for the objections raised by Muslim groups as on this day muslims were massacred in the police action. MIM alleges that celebration on this day will give room to communal clashes. And as such they suggest that there should be only one Independence Day for entire country that is 15th August.
On the other hand, Telangana people remember the atrocities made by the Rajakars on the villagers with inhuman behavior cruelly killing people and molesting women folk. In the village of Bairanpalli, they even paraded women naked and asked them to play Bathukamma without clothes. They killed 96 people of the village on one night. Telangana people want to commemorate the day of liberation from the atrocities of the Hyderabad Samsthan.
Today the celebrations also marked rift and tension at Osmania University. The Students of OU wanted to march up to Assembly which was not allowed by the police. Then students pelted stones on police and police retaliated with tear gas shells. The Telangana Vidyarthi Parishad gave call for the march up to Assembly and because of the prohibitory orders in the city rallies are not allowed by the police. That made the NCC gate of OU campus tense.
