Nirbhaya Accused convicted

The four accused that faced the charges of rape and murder in the moving bus in South Delhi nine months back were convicted on Tuesday.  The sentence is yet to be proclaimed.  It is a relief to the family members of the victim who was a medical student.

On the fateful day she was accompanied by her boy friend that was roughed up by the accused in the same bus in which the gruesome act was carried by them.

Out of the six accused, one person Ram Singh committed suicide in the jail.  Ram Singh was the main accused case on whom was abated after his death.  Another was a minor at the time committing the crime who is under the care of juvenile home.

The Sessions Judge Yogesh Khanna declared on Tuesday that the four accused Akshay Thakur, Vinay Sharma, Mukesh Singh and Pawan Gupta were found guilty beyond doubt.  They deceitfully invited the rape victim and her boy friend in to the house, locked the door and not allowed any other passengers in the city while the bus was moving.

In the words of the judge, “The act of abducting the victim by deceit, robbing, causing injuries and the act of some accused in pinning down the complainant [the boyfriend] while others took their turns in committing rape/unnatural sex and while one of them continued driving the bus and lastly throwing them out of the moving bus, sharing the booty, destroying evidence thoroughly show illegal agreement among them to commit such an illegal act and they had knowledge of the same.”

The accused were also charged for an attempt of murder on the victim’s boy friend.  The cases charged are proved beyond doubt on examining the victim’s dying declaration, the eyewitness account of her boyfriend and the DNA test.
