CBI launched its probe into Rs. 526 crore scam by Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority. It may be noted that VUDA allegedly handed over government land in MVP colony of the city to private individuals whereas it was supposed allot this land for the construction of a community centre as per the approved layout. According to the allegations, VUDA carved out 21 plots each measuring 191 square yards.
The court, which tried the case, held the auction by VUDA was illegal. VUDA approached the Supreme Court challenging the verdict of the High Court 2002. The Supreme Court, however, turned down the appeal of VUDA. Meanwhile, a few persons approached High Court for not getting the possession of the plots despite winning bids. The court then directed the Central Bureau of Investigation. And today, CBI officially launched its probe.
