Italian naval marines arrested, to be produced before court

Kerala police, who have arrested the two marines of the Italian ship Enirca Lexie on Sunday for killing the two Indian fishermen five days ago, brought them today to Kollam to produce them before a magistrate.

The Kerala Police have charged them under Section 302 of the IPC and announced they would have to face the consequences for killing the two Indian innocent fishermen.

The Kerala police brought the two Marines - Latorre Massimiliano and Salvatore Girone- to Kollam after intercepting the Italian oil tanker with the help of the Coast Guard and berthing it at Cochin Port.

The two fishermen-Valentine Jalastine and Ajeesh Binki were shot dead by the marines guarding the Italian oil tanker ship under the false presumption that they were trying to attack their ship. Indian naval authorities on verification found that the fishermen were unarmed and simply were involved in their business of fishing when the firing took place on them.

The Italian authorities have contended that their naval guards have fired at the fishing boat mistaking it to be a pirates’ vessel.

A team of top police officials led by the Kochi City Police Commissioner M.R. Ajith Kumar and Kollam SP Sam Christy Daniel interrogated the two marines and arrested them. (JUBS)
