Guntur district farmers suffer Rs.1000 Cr crop loss

Guntur district farmers suffered a heavy crop loss of Rs.1000 Cr in the sudden rains that lashed several areas of the district in the last two days following a depression formed in the Bay of Bengal.

Reports said most of the crops in the entire district were submerged under flood water giving a body blow to the aspirations of the thousands of farmers.

Crops of Paddy, maize, black gram, green gram, jowar, groundnut and Bengal gram in thousands of hectares are under knee-deep water with the incessant rains flooding the several divisions in the district.

Joint director of Agriculture in the district Mr JDV Sridhar told journalists that paddy crops in 40,000 hectares, maize crops in 9000 hectares, black gram and green gram crops in 8000 hectares, groundnut crops in 1000 hectares, Bengal gram crops in 980 hectares and Jowar crops in another 1000 hectares were submerged in the rains.

“These are the initial estimates and the final figures will be arrived at shortly after a complete assessment,” he said. (JUBS)
