The Supreme Court today granted bail to five corporate executives in the 2G scam raising hopes on the bail applications of other accused in the case including former Telecom Minister A Raja and DMK MP Kanimozhi who have been in Tihar jail for more than six months.
This is the first bail in the 2G scam that has been rocking the nation for the last one year.
Unitech Limited MD Sanjay Chandra, Swan Telecom Director Vinod Goenka and Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani group executives Hari Nair, Gautam Doshi and Surrendra Pipara were granted bail and asked to furnish two sureties of Rs 5 Lakh each to the satisfaction of the special judge holding the trial of the case.
The orders were passed by a division bench consisting of justices G S Singhvi and H L Dattu and the five accused will now be released from the Tihar jail on furnishing the sureties.
The accused had moved the apex court after the Delhi High Court and the trial court had turned down their bail pleas. CBI had opposed their bail pleas saying they may tamper with evidence.
The bail plea of Kanimozhi and four others will come up for hearing on Dec 1in the Delhi High Court. (JUBS)
