Bangaru Lakshman to face trial in lower court in corruption case

The Supreme Court today refused to dismiss the on-going criminal proceedings in a Delhi lower court in a corruption case involving the former BJP president Mr Bangaru Lakshman. After the Delhi High Court refused to quash the criminal proceedings, Bangaru Lakshman approached the apex court.

Tehelka journalists conducted a sting operation on Lakshman when he was the BJP president in 2001 and he was shown accepting a bribe of Rs. 1 lakh with a promise to influence the Defense department in awarding a fictitious contract.

On May 13, 2001, the Tehelka released the video CDs in which Lakshman was shown telling the journalists that he would use his good offices with the NDA Government’s Defense department in getting the deal sanctioned in their favour.

The lower court had in May framed charges against the BJP politician under section 9 of the Prevention of Corruption Act for accepting illegal gratification. “It appears there is a prima facie case against the accused in the case,” said the lower court.

Justice A K Ganguly of the apex court refused to interfere in the proceedings of the lower court.

Bangaru Lakshman, 72, had submitted that CBI had filed an application before the trail court and obtained a pardon for his former private secretary Gurumurthy while making him an approver in the case. “CBI tried to implicate me,” he said in his petition.

The apex court, however, dismissed his petition saying there was no merit in the argument. Bangaru Lakshman will now face the trial in the lower court. (JUBS)
