The epidemic that has plagued the country since independence is hoarding of money and predominantly in safe deposit lockers on distant lands. Addressing the issue as tenderly as possible the government plans a soft action plan against the hard core hoarders. The Union Minister of state for Finance SS Palanimanickam gave a written reply to the query of the action plan taken by the department on number of cases of information relating to money held in foreign bank accounts received. In his reply the Minister "The government has received a number of cases of information relating to remittances, payments and money held in foreign bank accounts etc under the provisions of the DTAA/TIEAs." Adding that “every reliable information including information received from outside the country, is verified according to the provision of Direct Tax laws and action is taken to being undisclosed amounts to taxation".
The minister also added that the Income Tax department has seized assets worth Rs 905.61 Cr and Rs 774.98 Cr in the 2011-12 and 2010-11 fiscal, respectively.
But analysts feel that this is just minuscule of what was earlier leaked to public by the whistle blower Wikileaks. When super powers like the America have impounded instant action to retrieve the stashed cash, the Indian Government is yet to take a tough stand on it. Earlier WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange released a list of Indians who had their safe havens in Swiss banks. He confirmed that ‘there is more Indian money in Swiss banks than any other nationality’. Judith Elmer who worked undercover and revealed the details, is right now in trouble. However the rulers are silent and moving things at a snail phase, on the issue. While official numbers are not available, Swiss banking officials have said that the largest depositors of illegal foreign money in Switzerland are Indian.
One small issue that needs introspection is, `put to gather the total earnings of both the top parties in the country accounts for Rs 700 Cr as per cumulative figures put in by the representatives of each party. However the unaccounted expenses for both these parties per election are roughly over Rs 25,000 Cr’ say sources. How this disparity could be accounted. In fact most tainted with cash stashed away are figuring in both the parties that eye for the reigns of the nation. (With Inputs from Internet- Aarkay)
