History of Jag Mandir Palace

Jag Mandir Palace is located on the southern island of Lake Pichola. The palace is three-storied and it is a palatial structure, made of yellow sandstone and marble. It is built in the early years of the 17th century.

To serve as a hiding place for Prince Khurram, who is popularly called as Shah Jahan, Maharana Karan Singh, who ruled the region, raised the palace. Prince Khurram revolted against his father during that period.  

Prince Khurram was born to a Rajput mother and it is because of this, Maharana Karan Singh extended support to Khurram, when the latter left the kingdom, along with his wife and two sons. It was then he provided them a safe haven in the Udaypur’s City Palace.  

The aristocrats were unsuccessful in adhering to the Rajput customs. Subsequently Karan Singh shifted them to the Jag Mandir Palace, where it was under the construction at that time.  

During his stay in Jag Mandir in 1623-24, Shah Jahan built world famous Taj Mahal.  

After the death of Karan Singh, the Jag Mandir Palace was completed by Maharana Jagat Singh during his reign in 1628-1652. The present form of the Palace, which can be seen, is due to the additions made by Maharana Jagat Singh.

Coming to a few of the facts in the history, during the 1857 revolt, Maharana Swaroop offered shelter to a number of European families in the Palace.

Gul Mahal

In Jag Mandir Palace, Gul Mahal is the place that drags all the attention, as Shah Jahan lived in this place, along with his family.

If the architecture is observed, the typical Islamic style can be felt, which hints us that, Karan singh kept in mind the taste of Shah Jahan, while constructing it.
 
The hall has fantastic interiors and is decorated with the Muslim crescent. There is even a Mosque in the complex of the palace to serve the Islamic religious purpose.

Other important places at Jag Mandir palace

The courtyard with the black and white tiles is another attractive place in the Jag Mandir palace.  

Along with the above, other important places at Jagmandir palace are Zenana Mahal which offers several chambers for the ladies of the Royalty, Bara Patharon ka Mahal, which is made of twelve solid marble slabs and Kunwar Pada ka Mahal, which is for the crowned prince.

 

Jag Mandir Palace even has beautiful gardens adorned with roses, jasmine flowers, palm trees, bougainvillea and frangipanni trees.

Above all, the eight life sized elephants carved out of the white marble is the sure shot mentionable structure of Jag Mandir palace. It gives the impression of guarding this beautiful island Palace.



Nowadays, the Palace complex, even comprising of a Darikhana Restaurant, which serves delicious Rajasthan eatables. Jag Mandir Palace is a nice place to visit and explore the halls, where once the Mewar royalty used to reside in this place.
