As per the media reports, the boy was beaten up by a classmate in Kent City, which is home to many sikhs. His father claimed that the victim was targeted as he is of Indian origin. The incident occurred at less than a block from Kentridge High School, on October 26. Both the boys are students of the school.
A video posted on mobile application Snapchat, revealed that the victim was followed by a teenaged boy, who punched and knocked him to the ground. As the boy tried to protect his head and crawl away, he was punched several more times by the other teenager.
The victim’s father said every time he looked at the video, he felt pain.
“I am feeling so, so bad because this happened with my son. They beat him from the backside and hurt him too much. This is a very big thing for me, here in America… I can’t explain… how I am feeling,” said the 14-year-old’s father, who refused to reveal his identity.
The racial divisions in the city were exposed with this incident, said the family. The attack was a continuation of an earlier classroom dispute, but not religiously or racially motivated, said the school officials. The parents of the victim said that their son did not even know his attacker’s name. “He never interacted with this guy. He never knew his name,” said the victim’s father.
Expressing outrage about the incident, calls and messages from people in the region poured in. The family said it wants peace for them and everyone. “I don’t want to see this again happen with my son or anyone else. I don’t want to see this,” the boy’s father said.
