Devadas Celebrates 60 Years

Devadas, one of the great and evergreen movies in Telugu was first released in 1953, completed 60 years this year.

The movie made on the basis of the story written by Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay was made in or dubbed into all most all Indian languages.

The Telugu movie was directed by Vedantam Raghavaiah and produced by D.L.Narayana was an instant hit in Telugu and after that it has hit the screens many times and every time the movie was received well by the audience.  Still the CDs of the movie are being sold.

Music was composed by Ghantasala and CR Subburaman.  Samudrala Raghavacharya was the dialogue writer and lyricist for the movie.  Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Savitri and Lalitha acted in the main roles of Devadasu, Parvathi and Chandramukhi.

It is very hard to give a credit of this wonderful movie adaption of the great love story to a single person.  It is a combined effort of the writer, director, music director, singers and actors.  It is like a well cooked tasty dish which does not give a flavor of any singe ingredient but gives a different taste from the mixed qualities of the ingredients used in the right proportion.

Acting of the artists, the depth of the lyrics with a philosophical touch, heart touching tunes, the way the songs were sung, well written dialogues and its delivery by the artists, screen play everything contributed in right proportions to the success of the movie.  It is one of the best of Akkineni Nageswara Rao’s film career.

Only thing the movie lacks is present day technology.  But it doesn’t bring down its quality of production.  Once the audience starts watching, they get deep into the story and forget the technical backwardness.  ‘Jagame Maya’ and ‘Kudi Yedamaite’ songs remained ever green in Telugu.

Usually Indians do not like a tragedy end in a movie.  But the tragedy of the movie Devadas was watched by many times by Telugu Cine lovers.  It is only 60 years now!  Devadas will retain its charm for many more years to come.
