Virat Kohli played a captain knock and took his side to a remarkable victory against Sri Lanka in the fifth and final ODI played at Ranchi. This win marked India's first ever whitewash against Sri Lanka and the win is an advantage for the side who will be flying to Australia tour shortly.
It was Angelo Mathews who won the toss and the visitors batted first. Yet again the opening pair of SL failed as Indian bowlers removed them too early in the first over. Though Dilshan and Jayawardene gave decent start, they could carry the score forward. Captain Mathews chipped in at the crucial juncture, where Sri Lanka need one big innings from one of their batsman. Along with Thirimanne, Mathews kept the scoreboard ticking. Mathews completed his maiden century and Thirimanne scored a half. Sri Lanka posted a total of 286 while Mathews remained unbeaten at 139.
In reply, Indian opening pair failed for the first time in the series. Again it was Angelo Mathews but this time it was with bowl, who removed Rahane and Rohit in quick succession. Then came Rayudu and Kohli who put on a hundred plus. Rayudu completed his half century and was looking for the triple figure. But tough luck, as he got himself run out in the mix up with Kohli. Then no other Indian batsmen could stand in crease and wickets were falling at one end. Kohli did not lose the hope of chasing the total and completed his 21st century. At last India won the match with eight balls remaining and Kohli remained unbeaten too.
Angelo Mathews was rewarded with 'Man of the Match' award for his contribution with both bat and bowl while Virat Kohli has been named 'Player of the Series.'
