A US company in Fermont, California has been penalised for underpaying eight Indian workers and also making them work more than expected hours in a week. The US Department of Labour called this incident “outrageous and unacceptable” and penalised with an amount of US $ 3,500.
According to the Associated Press [AP], the eight Indian workers hail from Bangalore and were paid US $ 1.2 per hour [Rs 75] which is quite less when compared to the minimum wage in California during the period was $8 per hour. Electronics for Imaging [Efi] is a 25 year old company in US and generated a revenue of $ 728 million last year. The company was asked to pay $43,000 in back wages and penalties. But the company paid the Indians unspecified bonuses.
One of the official of the Labour Department described this event as a worse he ever saw.
