Iconic Darjeeling tea brand, Makaibari Tea has created a record as tea importer from Japan, US and UK countries have booked orders at a record price of $1,850 per kg [Rs 1.11 lakh]. Makaibari tea estate in Kurseong area is one the oldest tea estates and produces one lakh kgs of tea every year.

Makaibari Tea was owned by the Banerjee family for four generations. Its present owner Rajah Banerjee sold 90 per cent of his stake in June to the city-based Luxmi Tea Company. Luxmi Tea owns gardens in West Bengal and Dooars with an annual production of about 15 million kg.
