Sponsorship System To Be Scrapped In Kuwait

In an effort to check the illegal population in Kuwait which is estimated as 90000 at present that is 68% of the total population of the Country, the Kuwait Government passed a Bill in the year 2010 for the labor force in private sector. But because of some political developments and also because of the need for some more amendments to be made in the law, the enforcement of it got delayed.

As per the law pertaining to the labor in the private sector in Kuwait, the work permits will be sold to the workers here after instead of selling to sponsors or employers that is in force now.   Implementation of it abolishes the kafala system that is the sponsorship.

Instead of the sponsorship system followed now, the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor (MSAL) will take responsibility for the expatriate labor force for which MSAL will establish an authority which will deal with the labor force instead of sponsors.  The activity of the established authority includes recruitment and monitoring the relationship of them with their employers.

This, the Kuwait Government thinks, will put a stop to visa trafficking that contributed to illegal entry of labor force in to the Country.  The sponsorship system now with a number of loopholes is allowing the sponsors to issue work permits for the non-existent jobs in the fictitious companies for the unskilled laborers.

With the implementation of the new system directly under MSAL it is hoped that it will stop the visa trafficking and also save the job aspirants from getting deceived by the sponsors.
