Lawyers decline the new multilevel parking fee at High Court

Lawyers at the Delhi High Court were surprised to see a parking fee levied on them after their short High Court Vacation. They declined paying a parking fee and tension between the police and lawyers rose when they were forced to park inside the court premises or the new multilevel parking. They also resisted the police who attempted to tow away their vehicles for violating the parking rules. The new multilevel parking costs Rs.10 per hour.

The Chief Justice settled the matter by requesting the police to allow parking outside the court premises temporarily after the High Court Bar Association talked to him. HC bar president and Additional Solicitor, Chandiok said that the parking place in the court premises would be reserved only for lawyers.

The confilct arose due to a confusion in the circular issued by the High Court Administration that asked lawyers to park only inside the court premises. They could use either the parking space or the new multi level parking without any parking fee while the advocates should compulsorily use the parking but the fare has not yet been decided.

DK Sharma, secretary of HCBA, said “The advocates visit the court on duty and hence the parking should be free to them; if the parking is free for the court staff, it should be free to the advocates too”.
