Naseema Mirza, mother of Sania Mirza, is now an offcial member of the support staff accompanying the tennis team for the London Olympics. She has recently been selected as the manager of team.
Other members of the team include the non-playing captain of India's Davis Cup, S P Misra, anjay Singh (Paes's trainer), Shayamal Vallabhjee (Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna's training consultant) and Milos Galecic (Somdev Devvarman's physiotherapist). With no qualifications, at least on paper, Naseema is also an elite member in the squad.
AITA however has justified its action of appointing her by quoting that the experience Naseema has is vast as she had accompanied the women team in Fed Cup and the Asian Games already. Her previous experience could be of crucial importance. She was the best choice to look after the needs of Sania and Rushmi, the lady Olympic team for Indian tennis.
“Naseema also has the capacity to understand the high pressure competition and the presing needs of the girls. It is definitely important that the mental and physical comfort are maintained to ensure a medal-winning performance”, AITA said.
