Comeback is tougher than debut- Nehra

It is known that, Indian cricketer Ashish Nehra got his right hand’s middle finger fractured, while attempting a catch in 2011 World Cup semifinal against Pakistan. But he might not have been aware at that time, that he has to wait for almost five years to get back into international cricket.

Continuing his intelligent variations in line and length, Nehra made his presence felt, in the last month held T20 series in Australia.

Speaking about his comeback, Nehra said, “I have always said that staging a comeback is more difficult than making your debut. It's even more so, when you are past 30. I have made a comeback at 36.”

“It's not easy for pacers to keep performing day in and out. You have to keep working hard. Even when I was out of the team, I always trained to play international cricket. If your goal is only to play domestic cricket then you will realise in one year's time you're out of the scene. I had couple of good IPLs and Champions League and that helped,” he added.

When asked about difficulties, if any, he faced in T20, Nehra said, “We don't play too many T20 internationals. IPL has been a great help for us when it comes to T20 cricket. As a bowler, you have to be prepared to bowl as and when you are asked to. Sometimes you bowl just one over and then you are asked to bowl the 8th, 14th or the 20th overs. I am used to bowling upfront or in the last 3-4 overs, but with experience, I have learnt to handle any situation.”

Expressing his self confidence, that he would still do better in the coming days, Nehra said, “You cannot buy experience. You always learn in international cricket. What I've learnt in the last 3-4 years is double of what I learnt in the 13-14 years of my career.”

Nehra even spoke about his bowling partner Jasprit Bumrah saying, “When I made my debut Jasprit was 5 years old. I keep teasing him about it. But nonetheless we are doing well together. It's not always that I guide him. I also get to learn a lot from him. Apart from spearheading the attack, Nehra also has the task of guiding youngsters like Hardik Pandya and Bumrah. "Being a senior bowler people tell me that I'm the pace spearhead. I don't believe in that as I feel everybody has to contribute on the field.”
