The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday issued a stay on Delhi High Court order that restrained Doordarshan from sharing the live feeds of World Cup matches for free of cost with the cable operators. Earlier, the Delhi court has barred Doordarshan from sharing live feeds but declined to squash the Prasar Bharti's 2000 notification which makes mandatory for cable operators to carry DD National and DD News Channel.
However, Board of Control for Cricket in India [BCCI] and the official broadcaster of World Cup in India, ESPN, STAR have approached the court said, sharing live feeds with DD channels for free of cost, is resulting in loss of revenues. The apex court of Delhi gave the verdict in favor of BCCI and the broadcasters and with no other option, the Supreme Court doors were knocked.
The Supreme which stayed the Delhi court's order asked ESPN, STAR to come up with suggestions which could bring an amicable solution to this issue and adjourned the case on February 17th. So this means, rural people who don't have access to STAR Sports channel can watch the matches in Doordarshan.
