Mary Kom Bags Gold At Asian Women’s Boxing Championships:- The five-time world champion and Olympic bronze-medallist Indian, MC Mary Kom (48kg) bagged her fifth gold medal at the Asian Women’s Boxing Championships. The 35-year old Mary Kom had won a fiercely-contested summit clash in Ho Chi Minh City of Vietnam on Wednesday.

Up against North Korea’s Kim Hyang Mi, the redoubtable Mary Kom, to add another accolade to her already crowded cabinet prevailed in a unanimous 5-0 verdict. Ever since the 2014 Asian Games, this is Mary Kom’s first international gold medal and her first medal in over a year.

Mary Kom found her most aggressive opponent so far in the tournament in Hyang Mi, but she was up for the task. Both the boxers were lunging at each other within seconds of the bell going off, unlike her previous bouts, in which the opening three minutes were invariably spent measuring up the rival.

Mary Kom scored for her ringcraft and matched quite evenly in speed and precision. Some fine footwork to outpace Hyang Mi at crucial junctures was included in her ringcraft. There was hardly any power-hitting on display but the contest was made engaging by the boxers’ fast-paced exchange of punches.

With her left hooks, the North Korean was relentless but the Manipuri with her combination blows scored on counter-attack and did not allow herself to be rattled.
