Aadhaar-SIM Linking Should Be Done By Feb 6 : Centre To SC:- Under the E-KYC verification, all the customers should link up their mobile phone numbers with Aadhaar by February 6, said the Centre to the Supreme Court, on Thursday.

The government citing an order passed by the Supreme Court, said that in February 2017, the apex court approved that all the SIM cards have to be linked with Aadhaar. And this has to be done within a year from the date of judgment.

Moreover, for opening new bank accounts, the production of the 12-digit biometric number was compulsory, also said the Centre. The deadline for linkage of Aadhaar with SIM “cannot be modified by the government unilaterally (as it is fixed by the SC), said the government”.

According to a report in a leading news paper, the government has decided to extend the deadline for linking Aadhaar with existing bank accounts from December 31, 2017 to March 31.

No starvation death had taken place anywhere because of anyone not having Aadhaar, asserted the government. A step towards curbing terrorists, fraudsters, criminals who use multiple SIMs to get away with crime, could be seen with the move to link Aadhaar with SIM.

The government has introduced a number of measures for secure linking of Aadhaar with SIM, amidst controversies surrounding the safety of data submission with telcos. Work is being carried on a process of SMS/IVRS and app-based verification, by the Department of Telecom and telecom operators.
